Niobium 521 Introduction

Nb521 niobium alloy is a medium-strength, ductile niobium alloy with the addition of W, Mo, Zr alloy elements and a small amount of C into niobium. This composition combines both solid solution strengthening and precipitation strengthening. It further improves the room temperature and high temperature mechanical properties of the niobium alloy.

Niobium 521 Coating Property

The molybdenum silicide high-temperature anti-oxidation coating fabricated from Nb521 alloy material exhibits a certain self-healing ability and has a coefficient of linear expansion close to that of Nb521 alloy material. Thus Nb521 possesses good anti-oxidation protection and bonding properties. Niobium alloy Nb521 and its matched high-temperature anti-oxidation coating have been successfully applied to the nozzles of the gas-oxygen-kerosene engine of a new generation of high-thrust launch vehicles.

Niobium 521 Fabrication Method

  • Nb521 can be processed into ingots by vacuum electron beam melting or vacuum electron beam as well as vacuum consumable melting. Then Nb 521 ingots can be manufactured into bars, sheets and plates of various specifications by hot extrusion, forging, drawing and rolling.

  • W and Mo are added to the alloy mainly because of their high melting point and similar atomic radius, which can form a substitutional solid solution to improve the creep resistance and high temperature strength of the alloy matrix. Elements zirconium and carbon are added into the alloy because carbon easily forms a dispersed precipitated strengthening phase with zirconium and niobium, which plays a role in precipitation strengthening and can further improve the high temperature strength of the alloy.

Niobium 521 Application

Compared with other types of high-temperature alloys, niobium alloys 521 has advantages such as low density, high specific strength at high temperatures (600-1600℃). Nb 521 owns excellent cold, hot forming properties and good weldability. They can be processed into thin-walled and complex-shaped parts and are used to manufacture components such as the thrust chamber extension of attitude control/orbit control engines for rocket engines, satellites, spacecraft, and missiles. They are one of the important nominated materials for aerospace structural components.
