Nb-1Zr can be processed into plates, strips, rods, wires, tubes, and various custom-machined components. Nb-1Zr plates/sheets are primarily used in high-temperature, vacuum, chemical processing, and specialized engineering applications. In practice, Nb-1Zr plates can undergo rolling, shearing, stamping, bending, welding, and machining; however, because niobium is a reactive refractory metal, the processing environment and process controls differ significantly from those used for ordinary steel or aluminum.
Processing Characteristics of Nb-1Zr Plate/Sheet: 1. Good plasticity and cold-working capability: Nb-1Zr exhibits excellent plasticity, allowing for cold rolling, cold bending, stamping, and other plastic forming operations under appropriate processing conditions. Plate production typically follows this sequence: forging → hot rolling → cold rolling → intermediate annealing → finish rolling; multi-pass rolling allows for the gradual achievement of the required thickness and dimensional accuracy. For thinner Nb-1Zr sheets, cold rolling yields superior surface quality and dimensional precision. 2. Rolling performance: Rolling is a primary processing method for Nb-1Zr plates. While the material is highly plastic, it undergoes work hardening as the amount of cold work increases. Consequently, intermediate annealing is usually required when the total deformation is substantial. A typical production flow is: Nb-1Zr Ingot → Forging → Hot Rolling → Annealing → Cold Rolling → Intermediate Annealing → Final Rolling. Controlling the reduction per pass, total processing rate, and annealing parameters allows for the attainment of specific mechanical properties and microstructural states. 3. Bending performance: Due to its good plasticity, Nb-1Zr can be bent and formed when in the appropriate state. However, bending performance depends not only on the specific Nb-1Zr grade but also on factors such as plate thickness, the degree of cold work, annealing condition, rolling direction, surface quality, and the bending radius. For products requiring a small bending radius, it is recommended to prioritize the use of materials in a suitably annealed state.
For complex deep-drawn parts, the effects of work hardening can be mitigated through a process involving multiple forming stages and intermediate annealing. If the application demands significant deformation, it is not advisable to predict the final stamping performance solely based on the tensile properties of standard Nb-1Zr sheet; instead, forming trials should be conducted. Nb-1Zr can be joined using appropriate welding techniques, such as Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) and other inert-atmosphere welding methods. Since niobium and its alloys readily absorb oxygen, nitrogen, and hydrogen at high temperatures, strict control of the protective atmosphere during welding is essential.
Overall, Nb-1Zr is a niobium-based alloy characterized by good ductility and workability. It is suitable for rolling, cold working, bending, stamping, welding, and machining. Factors such as the material's annealing state, the degree of cold work, sheet thickness, rolling direction, surface quality, and the specific processing method will significantly influence the final forming results.
