Niobium-Titanium (NbTi) wire is a superconducting metal wire composed primarily of niobium (Nb) and titanium (Ti); it is currently one of the most widely used and technologically mature low-temperature superconducting materials.

Niobium-titanium alloys exhibit excellent superconducting properties, maintaining a stable superconducting state at liquid helium temperatures (approximately 4.2 K). They possess high critical current density, good machinability, and a strong capacity to withstand magnetic fields. Consequently, NbTi wire is widely used in fields such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), superconducting magnets for scientific research, particle accelerators, magnetic confinement fusion, and high-energy physics experiments.

Compared to other superconducting materials, NbTi wire offers advantages such as superior machinability, mature manufacturing technology, and high reliability, making it one of the most commercially successful low-temperature superconducting wires available today.

Key Performance Characteristics of Niobium-Titanium Wire
1. Excellent Superconducting Properties
Niobium-titanium alloys have a critical transition temperature of approximately 9 K and can achieve stable superconducting operation when cooled by liquid helium. They possess high critical current density and critical magnetic field capabilities, meeting the requirements of high-magnetic-field equipment.

2. Good Machinability
Niobium-titanium alloys exhibit excellent ductility and plasticity. They can be processed into fine wires via methods such as drawing and rolling, making them suitable for manufacturing long, highly uniform superconducting coils.

3. High Reliability
NbTi wire benefits from mature industrial production technology, offering stable performance and high consistency, which enables it to meet the long-term operational requirements of large-scale superconducting equipment.

4. Excellent Low-Temperature Stability
NbTi wire maintains superior electromagnetic properties in low-temperature environments, making it a crucial material for manufacturing low-temperature superconducting magnets. Manufacturing Process: The production of NbTi wire is a complex process that requires strict control over alloy composition, microstructural characteristics, and wire performance. The primary manufacturing processes are as follows: 1. Alloy Melting: Niobium and titanium raw materials are first proportioned according to the design specifications. Highly homogeneous niobium-titanium alloy ingots are then prepared using methods such as Vacuum Arc Remelting (VAR) or Electron Beam Melting (EBM). Strict control is required during melting over alloy composition ratios, impurity levels (such as oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon), and ingot microstructural uniformity. High-quality ingots are the foundation for ensuring superconducting performance. 2. Forging and Hot Working: The niobium-titanium alloy ingot undergoes breakdown forging to achieve a microstructure suitable for further processing and to mitigate internal defects. Key steps include hot forging, extrusion, rolling, and intermediate heat treatment. Hot working enhances material density and microstructural uniformity. 3. Composite Wire Billet Fabrication: Commercial niobium-titanium superconducting wires typically utilize a composite structure consisting of a copper stabilizer and a niobium-titanium superconducting core. The process involves inserting a niobium-titanium rod into a copper sleeve to form a copper/niobium-titanium composite billet, followed by multi-pass drawing to achieve the desired wire diameter. The copper layer offers excellent electrical and thermal conductivity, enhancing wire stability and providing a current bypass in the event of a loss of superconductivity. 4. Cold Drawing: The niobium-titanium composite billet undergoes multiple cold-drawing passes to progressively reduce its diameter. Parameters requiring control during this process include the degree of deformation, surface quality, wire diameter precision, and internal stress. Multiple drawing passes enable the production of niobium-titanium wires ranging from millimeter-scale to tens-of-micrometer-scale diameters. 5. Heat Treatment and Aging: The niobium-titanium wire undergoes appropriate heat treatment to develop an internal microstructure that enhances superconducting performance. The functions of heat treatment include increasing critical current density, optimizing crystal structure, and improving magnetic field performance.
