What's so special about titanium alloys

Titanium alloy is a new kind of structural material, it has excellent comprehensive properties, such as low density (~4.5g·cm-3), high specific strength and specific fracture toughness, good fatigue strength and crack propagation resistance, good low temperature toughness, excellent corrosion resistance, the highest operating temperature of some titanium alloys is 550ºC, expected to reach 700ºC.

What are the classifications of titanium alloys
(1) High temperature titanium alloy.
(2) Titanium alloy based on titanium aluminum compound.
(3) high strength and high toughness β titanium alloy.
(4) Flame retardant titanium alloy.
(5) Medical titanium alloy.

Why is the price of titanium alloy high

1. Pure titanium is very soft and generally not suitable for use as titanium products. Other elements need to be readded. For example, titanium 64, commonly used in the aerospace industry, is mixed with many other elements to improve the metal properties.

2. Titanium is very active at high temperature and difficult to process. Sponge titanium must be remelted in an electric furnace to become a usable titanium ingot.

3. The speed is low, the titanium can not be cut, the speed is too high, the titanium will be oxidized, the ordinary machining center can not process titanium alloy products.

4. The structure of the product is very fine, which requires a lot of fine processing. It is definitely a big challenge for titanium, which is extremely difficult to process. In addition, titanium alloy products also involve titanium alloy welding technology, which is more difficult.

5. Titanium is only a few tens of thousands of tons of production capacity per year, compared with the annual production of several billion tons of steel materials, which can be said to be a minority metal.
