Foil rolling is a metal strip or sheet metal with a thickness of 0.02mm. Gold, silver, aluminum, copper, nickel, iron, tantalum, niobium, tungsten, molybdenum and other metals can be rolled into foil. Gold, silver, aluminum, copper foil is mainly used for decoration or packaging, etc., and other metal and alloy foil is mainly used in electronic industry, such as copper, nickel, chromium and nickel resistance alloy foil used to make load resistance strain gauge, precision and recording, video recording head clearance, such as tungsten foils for special tube, soft magnetic iron nickel alloy foil used to make the micro high frequency pulse transformer, etc. Rare earth metal foil is used in atomic energy reactors.

Various kinds of metal and alloy foil varieties are increasing, and the application scope is expanding. The old technique of producing metal foil is forging, which is still used today. The production methods of metal foil in the 1970s include electrolytic coating, vacuum evaporation, powder rolling, turning and rolling, etc. But the mass production of high-quality foil mainly depends on the rolling method.

The thickness range of foil billet is 0.35~ 0.8mm, and 0.5mm of billet is generally used, so it is easy to manage and arrange the rolling process. But in the production of foil thickness range wide, with only a blank thickness often caused some difficulties to machining process, sometimes even make the finished products can not meet the technical requirements, so in some specifications of rolling products, in order to facilitate the arrangement of the rolling technology, get satisfied products, can be appropriately adjust the thickness of billet.

The volume weight of the blank is mainly depended on the mechanization degree and structure performance of the equipment. The heavier the volume, the higher the productivity, the less geometric waste. With tapered collet on rolling mill, such as the volume is too small, due to the blank of the drum wall thickness thinning, rolling in the first time, make the open book on the tapered collet clamp is not tight, cannot be established after the tension, so as far as possible under the condition of may adopt large billet volume weight. The minimum weight and minimum weight limit for different equipment should also be available.

In the modern foil rolling mill, the weight of the billet of 1000 mm or so is not less than 1200 kg, and the maximum volume can reach up to 10 tons.
