High RRR ultra high purity niobium for superconducting applications

In basic research in high energy physics, researchers use superconducting accelerators to penetrate the interior of materials. They investigate basic interactions and the smallest possible structures and come up with entirely new knowledge and methods. They lay the groundwork for new technologies and sustainable solutions to the challenges of the future: energy supply, climate protection and health care.

Powerful accelerators have been promoted as one of their most important research tools. They use a variety of superconducting structures involving particle acceleration and collisions, based on different disciplines.

Niobium metal is characterized by high thermal conductivity, superior superconductivity and ease of processing. Therefore, this material can be suitable for the development and modeling of multi-class structures or resonators (such as elliptical resonators, single-layer spiral resonators (SSR) and half-wave resonators (HWR)).

High purity niobium tube is superconducting niobium tube. Compared with ordinary niobium tube, its niobium content is greater than or equal to 99.99wt%. The residual resistivity (RRR) of superconducting niobium tubes is higher than that of conventional nb tubes. In order to ensure the residual resistivity of superconducting niobium tubes, carbon, hydrogen and oxygen pollution should be minimized during processing. The existing technology to prepare superconducting niobium tube mainly adopts the ingot turning process. Due to the high turning temperature and the need for coolant, the added carbon, hydrogen and oxygen increase and reduce the final residual resistivity. And turning process of superconducting niobium pipe material utilization rate is low, waste of raw materials.
